Shocking! Steve Smith Retires From ODIs

Minutes after Australia’s semi-final loss to India in the Champions Trophy 2025, Steve Smith, the Australian captain, announced his retirement from One–Day Internationals in the post–match press conference.   This meant that Steve Smith’s last ODI match in Australian colours in the 50-over format was in the semi-final clash against India.   Steve Smith top-scored for Australia with a well-compiled 73 runs in the semifinals in Dubai.

Part of the ‘Fab 4,’ along with Kane Williamson, Virat Kohli, and Joe Root, Steve Smith was considered the best in the group as an all-format player along with Virat Kohli.

Steve Smith entered Australian cricket as a leg spinner who could bat to becoming Australia’s best batsman in the last decade.


The 35-year-old batsman played a total of 170 ODI scoring 5800 at an average of 43.28 with a healthy strike rate of 86.96. He is Australia’s 12th highest run scorer in ODI format

In his ODI career, Steve scored 12 centuries and 35 half centuries.


Known as a front-line batsman, Steve Smith also took 28 wickets and 90 catches.

Why Did Steve Smith Retire from ODIs?


The decision was clearly taken with the 2027 World Cup in mind to give Australian selectors the time to bring in a suitable replacement for the Australian legend.


An absolute legend in the longer format, Test cricket will be Steve’s priority and his goal will be to win and defend the World Test Championship.


After taking the mantle from Michael Clarke, Steve Smith captained Australia in 64 matches winning 32 and losing 28.


Due to Pat Cummins’s injury, Steve Smith took over the captaincy again for the Champions Trophy 2025.  Pat Cummins is recovering from an ankle injury.


Like Steve Smith, SuperSports360 believes many veteran players will retire after the Champions trophy as there is a 2-year game for an ICC 50 over format event.

Recently, Marcus Stoinis also announced his retirement in the ODI format.
