Introduction
A captain in cricket is a player who leads their respective side and is responsible for making all the strategic decisions on the field. While his performances are also under scrutiny like other players in the team, his conduct on the field as a leader is also constantly under the radar.
Being a captain in cricket is a prestigious role and comes with a lot of responsibilities.
The captain makes all the decisions on the field and makes educated spontaneous decisions as he sees appropriate according to the situation of the game.
The captain is usually one of the experienced players in the team who can handle Seniors and Juniors with an equal yardstick. He has to act as a bridge between the coaching staff and the team.
Captains are gauged on their effectiveness and the results they generate.
This article will present the Greatest Cricket Captains of All Time
Criteria to select the Greatest Cricket Captain
- ICC Championship / Trophies
- Overall record
Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting will go down in history as the most successful cricket captain of all time
The biggest advantage for Ponting while leading the Australia side was that his team was filled with match-winners.
Most of his match winners played under his leadership for 6-8 years.
Ponting’s Australia from 2002 to 2007 for 5 years was the best cricketing side ever.
Though he was not known as a good tactical captain, he was an aggressive captain who wanted to win matches by any means.
In that period, they won two WC trophies, the champion’s trophy and the Ashes.
Ponting, however, failed as captain of an underdog team when Australian stars like Hayden, Gilchrist, Warne, McGrath, etc., all retired.
The 2011 early exit of the Australian Team came as a shocker for one of the most successful teams in cricket.
Many people will say he led a team with legends so it is easy to win. But it is not easy to lead a team with a lot of talent which brings a lot of Ego problems. He remarkably led Australia for a decade!
But his record of winning ICC tournaments makes him the greatest cricket captain of all time

Steve Wagh
Much of Ricky Ponting’s success as a captain should be credited to Steve Wagh who too inherited a great team from Alan Border
Steve Waugh was responsible for shaping the way modern Test cricket is played.
Steve had a clear understanding of the opposition’s strengths and weaknesses and an equally uncluttered understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of his side.
His approach to the game was like a cold-blooded, scientific general.
His Mental warfare was not limited to sledging his opponents but the way his team bats bowls and fields all had the aim of causing mental disintegration, causing opponents to doubt themselves which led to their defeat.
Steve Waugh a captain, commanded the respect of all his opponents for his no-nonsense attitude and sheer doggedness.
He instilled “the never give up” attitude into the Australian cricket team.

MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni is the most successful Indian captain in history in terms of winning ICC tournaments. Under his leadership India won 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World cup. He won 2013 Champions trophy, A test mace. India also won the Asia Cup under his leadership in 2010 and 2016.
While MS Dhoni will be remembered as a great Captain, his record as a Test Captain was poor, even as a player. His style of play and captaincy suited the limited-over format.
In terms of winning ICC tournaments, MS Dhoni will be known as India’s most successful captain.
His leadership qualities, cricketing acumen, ability to stay calm under pressure made him an Indian Icon. His decision-making abilities often were instinctive and unconventional which suited the limited over games.
Dhoni’s ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations earned him the nickname “Captain Cool.”
His use of spinners in the powerplay, field placements, and even his unconventional wicketkeeping techniques set new benchmarks in the game.

No other captain in India has been able to win all the three ICC trophies in his career and this looks unlikely at least for some time.
Clive Lloyd
Clive Lloyd captained the West Indies between 1974 and 1985 and made the West Indies team, the greatest team in Test and ODI of the 20th century.
One of Clive Lloyd’s biggest successes was getting together individuals from various Caribbean countries for the sole purpose of becoming the best Cricket team. His Man management skill helped him to bring all the diverse cultures and made it into a cohesive unit.
Clive Lloyd was the first captain to win the ICC Cricket World Cup. He was the first captain to win the glorious World Cup twice consecutively.
Indian skipper Kapil Dev prevented Clive Lloyd from making a hat-trick of World Cup wins in 1983.
A mainstay in the batting lineup for 19 years, Clive Lloyd presided over West Indies’ most successful era. Lloyd was captain for 74 of the 110 Tests he played, a higher number than any other West Indies captain and his win percentage of 49% makes him one of the most successful cricket captains in Test cricket history.
He is also the most successful captain in ODIs with a win % making him the greatest cricket captain of all time in all formats.

Daren Sammy
Daren Sammy is the surprise entrant in our list of the greatest captains, simply for his achievement in the T20 format. After the retirement of Brian Lara, Walsh and Ambrose, West Indies went downward spiral for few years. They struggled to play at the level they were known of in Test Match Cricket.
During this time, Darren Sammy led the West indies side. With their style of cricket, Darren realised the potential of the team in the shortest format – T20.
In the span of 4 years, Darren and the West indies Team won 2 ICC T20 World Cup Titles.
The Revival of West Indies Cricket has to be credited to the manner the team played under Sammy.
Darren Sammy is widely regarded as one of the greatest leaders in West Indian cricket.

Alan Border
Alan Border considered one of the greatest captains of Australia, is credited to put a halt on the cricket dominance held by the West Indian teams of the 70s and 80s.
A task master, Alan Border is also credited to Aussie style dogged approach to the game.
Not a natural leader, nor a man associated with flamboyance , Border took the leadership role with the tearful exit for Kim Hughes in 84-55 series. Border worked on his captaincy and eventually applied himself to the task as proudly as he did to his batting. From the World Cup win in 1987 and regaining the Ashes two years later, Australia flourished under Allan Border’s leadership.
