Mahela Jayawardene back as Mumbai Indians Coach for the 2025 season

Mahela Jayawardene back as Mumbai Indians Coach for the 2025 season

With a disappointing 2024 season, the five-time champion Mumbai Indians’ pride was severely bruised. A proud franchise like Mumbai Indians, were the first IPL team to win five championship titles and are amongst the most successful teams in IPL history, will ensure that no stone remains unturned to make the 2025 season their own. With the Mega Auction to be held by the end of the year for the 2025 season, the Mumbai Indians made their first major decision by bringing back Mahela Jayawardene as the Head Coach.

Along with Mahela Jayawardene, Paras Mhambrey who was also earlier part of the coaching staff makes a comeback.

Mahela Jayawardene, the former captain of the Sri Lankan national team has been associated with Mumbai Indians for some time now in various capacity including as head coach, but the mantle of coaching was passed on to Mark Boucher the South African who had an average track record with the franchise in the last couple of seasons.

Mumbai Indians finished as the wooden spoon winner ending up at the bottom of the points table that ended an embarrassing season both on and off the field.

Mark Boucher may gets the boot

Mark Boucher may get relocated to one of the MI franchise teams in the other leagues around the world.

Mumbai Indians expanded their network of teams in other franchise tournaments and Mahela was made the global head of cricket to oversee this working with the coaching staff of all teams after Boucher took over as head coach for MI.

As Global head in the past 2 years, Mahela has seen success for MI

  • MI (WPL)
  • MI New York (MLC)

 and

  • MI Emirates (ILT20).

However, Mark Boucher’s performance as Head coach for MI in IPL would have triggered the change.

Mumbai Indians statement

“We are thrilled to have Mahela back as the head coach of Mumbai Indians. With our global teams having found their footing within their ecosystems, the opportunity to bring him back to MI arose. His leadership, knowledge, and passion for the game have always benefitted MI. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mark Boucher for his contribution over the last two seasons. His expertise and dedication were pivotal during his time, and has now become an integral member of the MI family.”

Jayawardene said “My journey within the MI family has always been one of evolution. In 2017, the focus was on bringing together a talented group of individuals to play the best cricket ever and we did very well. Now to return, at the same moment in history, where we look ahead at the future and the opportunity to further strengthen the love of MI, build on the vision of the owners, and continue to add to the history of Mumbai Indians, is an exciting challenge I am looking forward to,” the Sri Lankan said.

Paras Mhambrey who was with the Indian team under Rahul Dravid’s coaching team will now be back in Mumbai Indian colours though there has been no official press release from the franchise.

Lasith Malinga continues to be the bowling coach and how Paras Mhambrey fits into the puzzle is yet to be known.

With the impending Mega Auction, Mahela will have a tough few months to decide on their squad to retain and players to purchase.

Mahela Jayawardene could also help Mumbai Indians

Supersports believe that the move to bring Mahela Jayawardene could also help Mumbai Indians retain Rohit Sharma and maybe even their lost fans who were disappointed with Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as captain.

Mahela do share a great relation with the Indian captain.

rohit sharma

Mark Boucher did not have a cordial relationship with Rohit Sharma and his interview angered many Mumbai Indian fans.

Rohit Sharma's wife, Ritika Sajdeh

Rohit Sharma’s wife, Ritika Sajdeh, took to Instagram to post a comment on Mumbai Indians’ head coach Mark Boucher’s interview, in which he can be seen talking about MI’s decision to replace Rohit Sharma as captain for the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League.

She Wrote, “So Many things wrong with this …” This post went viral as it touched the sentiments of all Rohit Sharma and MI Fans.
