Third-Time Lucky? Will Delhi Capitals Win Their Maiden WPL Title

The third edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 is set to kick off today, February 14th, 2025.

This article will focus on Delhi Capitals and how they might be third time lucky to win their maiden WPL title after being runners-up in the previous two editions.

The 2025 edition will be the most competitive competition as all sides have packed their teams with internationals and Indian stars.

Delhi Capitals had a great mini-auction and have created a match-winning squad for the season with some strategic purchases.

The 7-time world champion and the most successful captain in the women’s International game, Australia’s  Meg Lanning will be leading the side.

The team looks stronger and more balanced as compared to the other 4 teams in the tournament with all bases covered.

Delhi Capitals Quest for Glory

The leadership skill of Meg Lanning is second to none and after two seasons, the Aussie will want to have a third shot at history by winning the elusive championship this season.

Batting looks very good for Delhi Capitals with a mix of power hitters and players who could play the anchor role.

Allrounders in the side include Marizanee Kapp, Jess Jonassen, and the current rising star in world cricket Annabel Sutherland who adds depth both as an all-rounder and a bowler, capable of shifting gears when the situation demands.

Indian bowling includes some good Indian stars like Shikha Pandey and Titas Sadhu

The current U19 World Cup winning captain, Niki Prasad could play a crucial role in their campaign.

A stronger Bench strength this season will come in handy in this tournament for the two-time runners-up of the tournament.

The Delhi Team needs to get performance from their Indian contingent this time around and not expect the Internationals to do all the work. This was their Achilles heel in the last two seasons.

By including Sarah Bryce in the team, Delhi has allowed themselves to play an additional international and now can field five overseas player in their starting eleven.

One player from an associate nation is exempted from the overseas limit in the playing eleven.

This will give the team the much-needed balance and advantage compared to the other teams.

Shafali Verma who is hurting from being dropped from the Indian team will be looking to make her comeback to the Indian team through this tournament. All eyes will be on this power-packed player.

Delhi Team looks the best on paper in the 2025 season. The expectations from the fans will be huge and Meg Lanning’s leadership and her cool demeanor will help keep the team in good spirits to cope with the expectations.

Heartbreak in the finals of the previous two seasons will be motivation enough for the Delhi girls to take that additional leap to lift the trophy this year.

Delhi Capitals will start their campaign against defending Champions Mumbai on February 15th in Vadodara.

Delhi Capitals has the best chance to win the 2025 WPL championship but they will need to get the most out of their Indian players and not rely only on their International players.

If there is one flaw in the Delhi Capitals team, it has to be the Indian players, especially Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali Verma. Both players perform well in the group stage but in a must-win situation, nerves get the better of them (especially Jemimah) and this can prove costly for the Capitals. Bowling may look vulnerable if Sutherland has a bad day.
