IPL 2025 Auction review | Punjab Kings – Updates & Overview
This article will discuss how Punjab Kings fared in the 2025 Indian Premier League auction.
Punjab Kings like in the past, wanted to hit the reset button yet again to build a whole new team for the new season.
This made their retention plans far simpler. They retained only 2 players to keep flexibility in the auction process.
- Shashank Singh: Retained for Rs 5.5 crore
- Prabhsimran Singh: Retained for Rs 4 crore
Was this the right retention plan?
Many would argue that the two retained players could have been repurchased at a much lower price.
The PBKS released the rest of their squad and entered the auction with a purse of Rs 110 crore. Punjab Kings came into the auction with the biggest purse. In an ideal scenario, the move could be great, provided enough talent was available in the auction pool.
The Auction
With the biggest purse going into the auction, all eyes were on the Punjab Kings and they did make a splash at the IPL 2025 auction.
Marquee player like Shreyas Iyer was purchased at 25 crores which looked far overpriced. But Punjab had the resources and the need to have a captain on board.
Arshdeep Singh was purchased back using the RTM card for Rs18 crore which again questioned their retention strategy. Could Punjab have not retained Arshdeep at Rs 12 -14 crores?
A Franchise being amongst the mix in the Indian Premier League since its inception has always failed to deliver even with big names in their team. Their best performance came in 2014, when they reached the final, only to lose to Kolkata Knight Riders.
The 2024 team was the best team Punjab had in comparison to other years but the decision to again revamp the team with a new Head coach Ricky Ponting for the 2025 season showed a clustered mindset.
Ricky Ponting, one of the astute cricketing brains in the game was roped as head coach for the 2025 season.

Super Sports Views and Predictions
Punjab Kings have always faltered in the auctions.
In the Mega auction, they spent Rs 62.75 crores on just three players, which is 57 % of their entire purse. This meant they had only Rs 47.25 crores to make the entire balance squad, with no major retention done before the auction. This is where they have faltered.
Other franchise with their smart retentions not only kept their core intact but also had a similar purse to purchase only a few needed players unlike in Punjab’s case.
We at SuperSports believe that there are too many cooks in the kitchen in the ‘think tank’ with most of them having zero to no knowledge of cricket.
In the past too, they have juggled with their core year after year thus making this franchise unable to have a steady team like the Mumbai Indians, CSK, GT, or KKR. This has always been their downfall.
They focus more on glamour stars and not on playing eleven compositions, eventually falling short either in the batting or bowling department or in some cases both.
Even during the auction, it was evident that they were confused about certain players especially when they had to use their RTM card indicating that not much homework had gone through.
In the 2024 mini-auction, they blundered by bidding for a player who they got confused with another player. They were forced to buy the player as the hammer had already fallen on the player
Punjab Kings focused on some star power, and seasoned campaigners, and their buys were more on a one-on-one basis and unlike other teams, did not look at buying players according to the composition of the team they wanted to build.
Over the years, despite having a good squad, their plans in the middle gets derailed. Let us hope the Punjab Fans are not left disappointed this time.
IPL Predictions
We give the squad 6/10. It is highly unlikely for Punjab Kings to reach the top 4 playoff position.
