IPLT20: IPL 2025 Auction |Defending Champions KKR – Updates & Overview

This article will discuss on the defending champion Kolkata Knight Riders, the third most successful franchise in the Indian Premier league and how it fared in the 2025 auction.

Kolkata Knight Riders did the impossible by winning the title and becoming the third most successful franchise in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Not known for their prowess at the IPL auction table, KKR still kept the mistakes relatively low this year but there were some glaring miscalculations after the end of the 2-day IPL auction process. The KKR franchise team looked satisfied with their buys.

Was letting go Shreyas Iyer a wise call?

IPL winning captain Shreyas Iyer was not retained. This raised few eyebrows.

This meant that the franchise was looking for a new captain, either from the retained list or from the auction list.

In the past KKR think tanks have been criticised for their auction decisions but this time around they were one of the busiest in the auction room.

Retained List

Kolkata Knight Riders made a brilliant retainer strategy with retained players in a similar price bracket.

Like the Mumbai Indians, KKR too tried to maintain their core before the actual mega auction begins.

List of Retained Players

 PlayersPrice
Rinku Singh ₹13 crore
Varun Chakravarthy₹12 crore
Sunil Narine ₹12 crore
Andre Russell ₹12 crore
Harshit Rana ₹4 crore
Ramandeep Singh ₹4 crore

Purse Remaining: INR 51 crore (out of INR 120 crore)

RTM Options: No Option available

With their target set for their 4th title, they were able to retain all their match winners of the last season. Only Venkatesh Iyer who did extremely well in the title winning season was left to be bought back in the auction.

In their quest to get a winning team, did KKR forget to buy a captain in the auction? Did they over pay for some players

Yes, you read it right. With Shreyas Iyer not purchased back in the auction, KKR got their calculations a bit wrong.

Venkatesh Iyer was one of the performers of the 2024 season and it was clear that KKR might go back to purchase him in the auction. While they were looking at a mid-15 crore range, Venkatesh Iyer, became the most expensive all-round player in IPL history, for a record-breaking Rs 23.75 crore on Day 1 of the auction.

With this price, has KKR decided on their captain? Does the price justify for a player who has not cemented his place in the national side?

Hits

  • Six players retained are automatic in the playing eleven.
  • Strong foreign player contingent thus strengthening the backups for the 4 foreign slots
  • Excellent spin department

Misses

  • Loyalty is expensive but Venkatesh Iyer has gone for a lot more which has created Imbalance for buying more quality in the squad.
  • Inexperienced fast bowling squad
  • Nitesh Rana and Phil Salt who did well for KKR last season was not bought back
  • Too much reliance on Sunil Naraine – the batsman who can be a hit or miss
  • Captaincy will be an issue as it is not yet decided and with Venkatesh going for Rs 23.75 crore may now be the front runner. Another alternative could be Ajinkya Rahane.
  • The 2024 winning coaching staff is absent this year.

Super Sports View and IPL predictions

Kolkata Knightriders could have had a better auction if they had not gone overboard for one player. They still have covered most bases.

Not sure who the captain would be will create a sense of confusion in the team.

They too are an injury prone team. They have enough backups this season, they too like Mumbai Indians over rely on their first playing eleven.

They will desperately want a repeat season of Sunil Narine with the bat, but for a player who has retired and plays only league cricket currently is wishful thinking. The legendary West Indies all-rounder won the MVP award in IPL 2024.

Prediction
