Why Did Steve Smith Retire from ODIs?

The decision was clearly taken with the 2027 World Cup in mind to give Australian selectors the time to bring in a suitable replacement for the Australian legend.

An absolute legend in the longer format, Test cricket will be Steve’s priority and his goal will be to win and defend the World Test Championship.

After taking the mantle from Michael Clarke, Steve Smith captained Australia in 64 matches winning 32 and losing 28.

Due to Pat Cummins’s injury, Steve Smith took over the captaincy again for the Champions Trophy 2025.  Pat Cummins is recovering from an ankle injury.
