The Mumbai Indians (MI) have been one of the franchises to have dominated the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its inception. However, over the past few seasons, there have been signs of this cricketing powerhouse crumbling. Under Rohit Sharma, the franchise was the first to reach 5 championship titles and was considered the gold standard of franchise teams in the league. Rohit Sharma built the Mumbai Indians (MI) dynasty of a team that dominated the IPL games with a culture of brilliant, calm tactical leadership.
All IPL teams struggled after the Mega auction shuffle, when teams had to let go of some of their key players, which shook the basic foundation of most established IPL franchise teams. The mighty Mumbai Indians (MI), too, had to let go of players like Hardik Pandya and were forced to rebuild their team.
After 2 poor seasons following the Mega auction, the overzealous franchise owners of the Mumbai Indians (MI) made a call that is now haunting the Five-Time champions. Rohit Sharma was made to step down as captain, and Hardik Pandya was made the new captain.
The decision miffed many Mumbai Indians fans as Rohit Sharma was captaining the national team then. Little did the franchise know that the Hitman would lead and win two ICC championships for the national team during this period.
Removing Rohit Sharma from IPL captaincy in 2024 felt like ‘killing the Goose that laid golden eggs’. Under Rohit’s captaincy, players like Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Verma and even Hardik Pandya thrived in a stable environment built around Rohit Sharma’s Leadership.
The change in leadership not only made the situation go from bad to worse, it also saw the Mumbai Indians (MI) languishing at the bottom of the points table in the 2024 season. The captaincy change decision also did not go down well with the Mumbai Indians (MI) fans who booed their own newly appointed captain during the entire 2024 season. The team was not a cohesive one, and looked completely railroaded.
While 2025 was a better year with Fans coming to terms with the leadership change, but the MI team was still knocked out at the eliminator stage.
IPL 2026 – Warning Bells are starting to ring for MI
Before the 2026 season started, Mumbai Indians (MI), with a strong team, were one of the tournament favourites to reach the IPL 2026 Finals. But after two weeks of the IPL 2026 Season, the Mumbai Indians (MI) are struggling with a hat-trick of losses after their initial opening game win. Mumbai Indians (MI) are currently with 3 losses and 1 win in their 4 games and are placed in the bottom half of the points table.
Alarm bells should start ringing at the Mumbai Camp.
Is Mumbai Indians paying the price for disrupting a successful era ?
Cricket is not played on paper. Dressing room environment, trust and emotional bonding play a vital part in the game.
What seems to trouble the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 2026 season ?
- Captaincy
Hardik’s leadership has come under immense scrutiny and criticism. Former Players have called Hardik Pandya’s leadership average and plagued by a lack of tactical approach. His decision-making has come under question, especially in managing the rotation of his bowlers. Hardik is finding it difficult to captain a team of experienced and established players as compared to leading a young inexperienced Gujarat Titans squad.
That is why Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni were different from others. They were strategist.
Hardik was also a frontrunner for the national team white-ball captaincy but was later overlooked by the selectors after Hardik’s short stint as a makeshift captain.
There were also rumours of many MI senior players demanding that the management replace Hardik with Suryakumar Yadav, the current team India World Cup-winning captain.
- Team Environment
A lot has been discussed on how the team environment affects individual performances. Currently, in the IPL 2026 season, most MI players look terribly out of form, which reflects a possible rift in the team environment.
- Pitch Conditions
The Mumbai Indians (MI) boast one of the best seam attacks in the tournament. But pitches made in MI’s home ground (Wankhede Stadium) games have been flat batting tracks, making the MI bowling unit look below average, and opponents have out-batted the five-time champions. This lack of preparedness shows very poorly on the coaching staff and the administration, who failed to advise the groundsman to prepare pitches suiting the home team’s strengths.
- Big Match Pressure
MI’s success over the years has been their Big Match Aura under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, which has shown a never–die attitude that seems to be lacking in the few games played this season. In the high-scoring thriller against RCB, MI fell short despite a good fight. In the past, MI mastered such pressure situations, but now they seem to crumble in.
- Rohit Factor
One cannot help not to go back to the blunder of the MI management to take the captaincy away from Rohit Sharma.
The metaphor – ‘Killing The Goose That Laid The Golden Eggs’ by the greedy farmer holds true for the Mumbai Indians.
If there is one reason to point out for MI’s declining fortune, it has to be the Rohit Sharma factor.
Rohit brought stability in leadership, and he was well respected amongst his colleagues. This ensured a great dressing room environment. He was also a captain who backed players who were going through lean patches and helped them regain their lost form.
While today, he is on the ground and helping Hardik with all possible help, it is different when you hold the authority.
MI Management jumped the gun in changing leadership without considering the effects of the drastic move. Why was the mega auction factor not considered? Why was Rohit singled out after two seasons and not given the chance to bring back the team to its past glory.
MI had a proven formula under Rohit Sharma. As a captain, Rohit Sharma was at the peak of his career when he was unceremoniously removed from MI captaincy, and it was proved by his winning two back-to-back ICC Trophies.
MI’s disastrous 2024 season only proved that MI franchise owners erred in their decision.
Summary
Other factors may also be the reason for the poor start of the IPL 2026 season. Mumbai Indians need to address these issues at the earliest.
- Prepare pitch conditions to suit MI bowlers. Even Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Bolt look average.
- Batting form needs to improve. Injury to Rohit Sharma may cause concern and a suitable replacement may be needed in the near future.
- Tactical inconsistencies in bowling changes have hurt MI.
- Absence of Will Jacks is hurting MI.
- Elephant in the Room is the failure of the coaching staff. Heads need to roll.
- Hardik Pandya projects an image of a non-inclusive person. This needs to change.
MI fans can still hope for a revival as the squad is immensely talented, and IPL standings can make a quick turnaround. MI must look to shake off the inconsistency and have a good run in the coming weeks.
All Teams in IPL 2026 are far more evolved teams. Teams are stronger and more balanced. Many teams have great young players who have redefined aggressive batting and effective T20 bowling.
Mumbai Indians (MI) need to have the self-belief that, even with increased competition, they still hold the upper hand as being one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.
